IIT GUWAHATI: FIRST IIT TO INTRODUCE MS (RESEARCH) PROGRAMME IN E-MOBILITY
IIT Guwahati introduces MS (Research) program in E-mobility to take the opportunity of electric mobility.
From 15th June 2020, the admission procedure will start in IIT Guwahati. The Departments of Electronics and Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from the coming academic year (2020-2021) is jointly offering the program due to the multidisciplinary nature of the curriculum.
IIT noted that the government has launched schemes and inducements to promote electric mobility in the country. The adoption of EVs has opened new opportunities. Thus, it is imperative to be prepared to extract maximum out of this unique opportunity. A significant step towards the preparedness is training the next generation in EV technology. To address this, the Institute has launched this unique program in e-mobility. The aim of the Institute is to develop a world-class 2-years MS (Research) program that is relevant to the needs of the country.
Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, said that IIT Guwahati is looking forward to fostering interactions with the industry in frontier technologies, including introducing courses on EV and e-mobility technologies, such that highly trained manpower is readily available to work in these interdisciplinary areas and the country keeps pace with the global trend of competitiveness.
IIT stated that the Institute is offering a total of 20 seats for the program. For the students who have completed their B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Production Engineering, 10 seats are offered by the IIT. For the industry-sponsored candidates, the other 10 seats are available for them. A written test and/or interview be there for the selection of candidates.
Total of 20 seats for the program is offered by the IIT Institute. For the students who have completed their B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Production Engineering will be given 10 seats.
The institute further informed that the Institute has developed the curriculum in consultation with the leaders of the automobile industry. The hallmark of the program is that it not only focuses on the theoretical aspects of the EV technology, but one-third of the curriculum is dedicated to laboratory work which has hardware as well as modeling-based experiments.
The syllabus will cover topics such as:
• Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
• Dynamics and Control of EVs
• Energy Storage and Conversion.
Prof. Praveen Kumar, Coordinator of the program, said that This program is truly a collaboration between the industry and academia and covers topics such as smart mobility, EV drivetrain design and control, EV testing standards and protocols, charging infrastructure and V2G, among other topics.
Prof. Santosha K. Dwivedy, IIT Guwahati, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, further explained that this program will provide an opportunity to the students and professional engineers to develop their skills related to design, manufacturing, development, and maintenance of Electric Vehicles and their components using the state-of-the-art techniques.
Prof. Rohit Sinha, IIT Guwahati, Head of the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering added that the nation is projected to adopt the EV culture in a big way, within one decade. He said it is high time for young engineers to enlist their name in this exciting technological revolution and reap fulfilling career opportunities. He is confident that this new MS program will help them realize their dreams.
IIT noted that the Institute will also regularly conduct sessions and seminars delivered by industry experts. The objective behind these sessions is to make the students aware of the state-of-the-art in the EV technology and foster industrial problem-solving skills in them. The students will be provided with top-level computational and experimental facilities to execute the project work.
