On Wednesday, the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, asked the UGC (University Grants Commission) to revisit the guidelines issued by the latter on conducting exams and the upcoming academic calendar. This decision has been taken by the HRD minister on account of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.
The RC Kuhad panel recommended the exams to be canceled. This panel was set up to see the issues related to examination and academic calendar considering the pandemic.
The panel has suggested that an appropriate “averaging” formula should be used to allot marks to students.
Nishank tweeted that he has advised the UGC to revisit the guidelines which were issued earlier by it for the exams of intermediate and terminal year students. He also said that the health and safety of students, teachers, and staff will be the foundation of the revisited guidelines.
According to UGC officials, a final decision on the cancellation of exams is yet to be taken.
Officials have said that if the exams are canceled, they will come up with an alternative criterion for the allotment of marks and grades. They also added that there is a possibility of some students feeling that the criteria chosen are disadvantageous to them.
UGC is the higher education regulator. It had issued the earlier guidelines based on the panel’s report for the upcoming academic session. According to the earlier guidance issued, fresh admissions were to be taken in August. The fresh classes were scheduled to begin in September.
The UGC had allowed the Universities to choose the mode of examination for themselves. UGC’s move was opposed by students and teachers across all the universities.
