CAT (common admission test)is a test conducted by IIM for admission in top notch colleges of India and other B grade schools of India. Every year number of students appear for this exam making it a tough challenge. Every competitive exam needs a tried and tested approach for preparation. Here are few tips and steps that CAT aspirants can follow for particular subject:

1. Understand the syllabus

The first step toward preparation for any exam is going through the syllabus deeply. Understand and note the topics to be covered and estimate the time required to spend on each topic. The CAT exam is divided into four sections Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability. Though it is said exams is based on 10th class level but questions are always supposed to be tricky.

2. Qualitative Ability for CAT

Start with qualitative ability For CAT which is math in simple terms. It includes topics like number system, arithmetic, algebra, geometry,permutation& combinations and set theory. If you are not much good at Maths then you need to start with 3 to 5 topics per week so that before the time of exam you would have covered topics and get maximum time for revision.

3. Data Interpretation for CAT

For Data Interpretation students need to improve their raw mathematical ability and calculation speed. The section includes interpreting and comprehending graphical data and hence questions following them. One can start with learning tables up to 30 and remembering decimal equivalents of fraction. Calculation can also be speed up through Vedic maths. But it should not let you distract your focus from CAT.

4. Logical reasoning for CAT

For cracking LR section of CAT exam one need to practice and train his/her mind accordingly. It is suggested that Sudoku game help in grounding the thinking process. One can also look for puzzle books by famous authors such as George J Summers, Ravi Narula and Shakuntala Devi. Logical reasoning requires ability like finding patterns quickly. Students need to develop that ability in a timed manner.

5. Verbal Ability for CAT

Verbal Ability, in common language –‘English’ can only be prepared through reading and reading a lot. The first choice to start with is ‘newspaper’. Newspaper surely keeps you updated with daily and hyped issues. Secondly, it increases your vocabulary and power of comprehending sentences. Search good books of your interest and read them whenever you get time like while travelling. Magazine is also a good option.   For vocabulary, ‘Word power made easy’ is considered as good book.

6. Previous Question papers and mocks

Attempting previous question papers is a must before confronting CAT as it give you a clear idea of what to expect in exams. CAT aspirants should also sincerely go through mock papers. Set time limit for each section so that side by side you can also work on your speed and accuracy. Assign yourself at least one mock test paper daily.

7. Revise thoroughly

During practicing mock test and previous year questions point out your mistake. More you will practice, more you will learn to differentiate between good question and bad questions. Questions which are easy but will take lot of time to solve are treated as bad question. Student should avoid them.Such questions should be attempted only after you have seen the remaining questions. Revisit your mistakes and learn them.

CAT aspirants should focus on accuracy for scoring well in exam.It is also advised that student should not try to learn new topics few week before the exam instead they should brush up the concepts already learned. A pre planned scheduled can only help you in going through the syllabus smoothly. Don’t lose hope if you do not score well in initial mock test. Keep your efforts consistent.
