As per the reports, the Higher Education Commission of India will be set up in the next academic session and is likely to replace autonomous bodies like University Grants Commission (UGC) and AICTE.
The implementation of the National Education Policy in 2020 recommended the establishment of the Higher Education Commission of India as a single overarching umbrella body for higher education, excluding legal and medical education.

Higher Education Commission to Introduce Common Admission Test
At a virtual conference organized by the FICCI, Amit Khare, the Higher Education Secretary said that the country will witness some major changes in 2021 itself. A common entrance test for admission to all the central Universities will be reintroduced in 2021. Also, Academic Bank of Credit will become the primary source through which the students can transfer credits from one University to another.
Speaking of regulatory changes planned in 2021, he included that bodies like the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will get merged.

He added that by the next academic year, we will establish one single Higher Education Commission of India. Also, the National Education Policy further emphasizes on National Research Find to promote research in the country.
Furthermore, all Indian Universities, be it Central, State, or Private, can have competitive funding. The idea is similar to the National Science Foundation of the USA. However, a few additions have been introduced, likewise, social science will also be a part of the National Research Fund.
