Government officers have been deployed in 12 Delhi government-funded colleges of Delhi University to monitor financial transactions. The Director of Higher Education had assigned these officers. The directorate has further issued a notification to the Delhi University colleges stating that the appointment of these officers will be for over six months. After this move of the directorate, a dilemma of confrontation between the University of Delhi and the Delhi government seems to be originating. Teachers’ organizations have even started mobilizing and have given warning of starting a protest by taking to the streets very soon.

The convener of the teacher’s organization INTED, Pankaj Garg said that this is happening in Delhi University for the first time. This move is a direct attack on the DU colleges. He added that financial transactions are an internal issue of DU. How can an external party interfere in this? At the same time, another DU college principal said to monitor University’s financial transactions but first release the salaries of teachers as the teachers have not yet received the salaries since the last four months. This move is not only against the statutes but also deliberately disturbing.

Prof. Balaram Pani, Dean of DU colleges said that this will only worsen the problems. It is an intervention in the autonomy of DU colleges.

If a delegation of colleges comes, we will take up this issue in front of the government. Delhi University Teachers Association President Rajib Ray said that this is the first time that the funding agency is appointing a representative. The Delhi government may give grants, but colleges run by DU rules. All we want is that the salary of teachers and staff should not be withheld. Still, in many colleges, teachers have not received last four months’ salary.
