The Central Government of India wants the top higher educational institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology(IITs) to set up their campuses abroad. According to the plan laid down in the New Education Policy, this plan is also mentioned.

In the New Education Policy, it is mentioned about the Internationalization of Education. Foreign Universities can set up their campuses in India and Indian institutions can also set up their campus abroad. The Director of IIT Delhi V. Ramgopal Rao said that they have already begun their discussion with other IITs and top institutions.

THE NEW EDUCATION POLICY INVITES FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES IN INDIA

The New Education Policy plans of Internationalization of Education. It states that it is inviting International Universities to come and set up campuses in India. It is also encouraging top institutions to go and start campuses abroad. He said that MHRD wrote to IIT Delhi and asked about the plan to do that and whether we are interested to take this up. Because the footprint is small, the International ranking doesn’t look so good and is limited to India only.

The director said that Indian institutions do not have a presence outside India and students, faculty, and staff are Indian. Rao said that if IIT Delhi sets up a campus in the Middle East, they will have students and faculty from there and footprint will increase.

NEW EDUCATION POLICY AIMS TO ACHIEVE 50 PERCENT GER BY 2040

He further said that setting up branches abroad will help to increase the enrolment and the government will achieve the goal of a 50 percent Gross Enrolment Ratio by 2040. The New Education Policy aims to achieve 50 percent by 2040. The director of IIT Delhi said that if GER would double, it means that enrolment in higher education will also double. Indian Institutions have to scale up and become much larger in terms of their enrolment.

NEW EDUCATION POLICY WILL ENCOURAGE INDIAN INSTITUTIONS IN OTHER COUNTRIES

The Government of India is also encouraging IITs to extend their branches abroad. According to the New Education Policy 2020, the Government will encourage the higher Indian institutions to set up their campus in other countries. All the Universities selected can begin its operation in India.

 

The Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said this when the association of Indian Universities organized a vice-chancellors’ conference on 17th August. The Government invites the world’s top 100 universities to India and collaborate with them. In the same way, the best institutions will be able to set campuses abroad.
