EXAMS 2020: UGC EX-CHAIR AND TEACHERS ACROSS NATION WRITE AGAINST CONDUCT OF FINAL YEAR EXAMS

Along with 27 teachers from various universities across the entire nation, the former University Grants Commission (UGC) Chair Sukhedo Thorat has written a letter to the current chairperson of the UGC. The letter asked the current chairperson to cancel the decision to conduct the final semester/year examination. It suggested to evaluate them on the past performance instead.

This letter has been signed by the professors from Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Hyderabad, University of Mumbai, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, among others, and is addressed to the UGC Chairman D P Singh.
The letter also said that the UGC’s latest advisory regarding examinations was unfortunate as it takes us backward and not any forward. The advisory effectively extends the period for holding the exams for the final/end semester exams until September which is the second such kind of postponement. This has created uncertainty for the states which have already canceled the exams.

DU EXAMS: FINAL YEAR EXAMS WOULD COMPULSORILY BE CONDUCTED BY END MONTH OF SEPTEMBER- UGC

This recommendation to cancel the exams for final year students was kept taking in view of the unprecedented health emergency and not by the doubts by the value of the examinations.

As per the signatories, the examinations which will be conducted in an online or maybe mixed mode will be biased because it will eventually favor those students with better access to the internet and will work against those whose access is precarious putting them to a disadvantage. Also as there is no viable method of ensuring a proper invigilation of online exams hence referring to them as “open book” exams would be an attempt to rename a failing as a virtue.
