ENGLISH TEACHING PROGRAM LAUNCHED BY US EMBASSY AND DELHI GOVERNMENT

A 10-week long online English teaching program has been launched by the Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy David H Kennedy along with Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia for 700 pre-service teachers from all-women colleges of the city.

Sisodia also invited US First Lady Jill Biden during the event to visit the Delhi government schools and to interact with students.

For the launch of the program conducted by the US Embassy’s Regional English Language Office, the other senior US embassy officials, besides Kennedy, were also present.

Sisodia said that they were training future teachers. The teachers were getting quality training in advance so that they work the best for their children. In developing global perspectives, English was a key language and it was important that their teachers and students were well-equipped with it.

Kennedy said that English was an important language for student’s mobility and economic development. It was great for him to see the Delhi government and the US Embassy jointly working actively on it.

The long association of the US Embassy with the Delhi government was acknowledged and appreciated by Kennedy. He also appreciated the efforts taken by the deputy chief minister in ensuring that the teachers in Delhi learned from the best.

The Delhi government, in a statement, said that the courses were designed to address some of the objectives outlined in India’s new National Education Policy (NEP) and it will also help the teachers in teaching English.

It says that the courses will be promoting learner-centered and reflective pedagogy as mandated in the NEP. It will also enhance the abilities of the teachers to supper the development of the students’ proficiency in the English language in all subject areas, as well as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration along with other 21st century skills.

Hands-on experience with the new classroom technologies will also be incorporated with this new initiative. It will also support teachers in addressing some of the COVID-19 pandemic related challenges that they were facing currently.

The statement also said that the graduates will use the skills they learn in the program to benefit tens of thousands of students over the course of their careers.
