The University of Delhi began its academic session for the year 2020-21 for 2nd and 3rd-year students from August 10. Several Delhi University colleges have already issued the notice for submission of fees for the year. The University has, however, not granted any concession or relaxation in academic fees for the students amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) has written a letter to DU vice-chancellor seeking relaxation in academic fees amid coronavirus times. When the Indian economy is at sixes and sevens due to the coronavirus outbreak, the University of Delhi is charging the wholesome fee without any relaxation.

DUSU has illustrated the burning questions of people that have arrived due to coronavirus outbreak. The letter reads that coronavirus pandemic has led to several hardships for people and under such circumstances, DUSU requests the Delhi University to take up the right measures and allow for the fees to be paid in installments.

Students are in enormous financial distress due to coronavirus, while the University has issued the notice for submission of fees. Delhi University Students’ Union has suggested various steps to the University to ease the hardships of the people. The following measures have been suggested by DUSU to Delhi University:

Relaxation in Submission of Academic Fees

The Delhi University Students’ Union has demanded relaxation and concession in the submission of fees being charged. DUSU in its first measure has asked for providing relaxation in the academic fee for the year 2020-21.

Exemption of Extra Charges

The student union has called upon the University to exempt all other extra charges from the academic fees. The extra charges including electricity, rent, water, sports, hostel charges should be exempted from the academic fees for the year 2020-21.

Payment of  Fees in Installments

The letter demands to call off the payment of the entire fee in one installment. The third measure suggests that an option should be provided to the students to pay their fees in the installments.

Variable Academic Fee Structure

The fourth measure of the letter states that a variable fee structure should be present for the same course in a variety of colleges.

Structure of Academic Fees

The letter suggests that there are so many people or families of students who have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown. It is next to impossible for all these families to submit the fees, hence the University of Delhi must reconsider the structure of the fees.

The Students Union of Delhi has requested Delhi University to consider the issues of the students and resolve them thoroughly. Through the letter, the DUSU has requested Delhi University to provide relaxation in the academic fees of the students.
