The University of Delhi DU has appointed the former head of its chemistry department and vice-chancellor of Pondicherry University as its representative to investigate the allegations of suspended VC Yogesh Tyagi.

On Wednesday, the Union Education Ministry moved forward DU’s communication on appointing Professor Gurmeet Singh to the President’s office for cognizance and constituted an inquiry committee.

As per the senior central official, the appointment was made by the ministry after receiving communication for a DU representative from the President’s office for investigation according to a specific provision in the Delhi University Act.

Under sub-section 3 of section 7 of the DU Act, the representative shall have the right to be present and heard during any such inquiry or inspection. Singh also held other administrative charges before his retirement at Delhi University.

Tyagi was suspended on October 28, 2020, a day after a visitor to President DU, who gave his assent to the investigation against him, on charges of being off duty, misuse of power, and lack of commitment. The order of the ministry stated that Tyagi was placed under suspension until further orders as he may influence the temper and witnesses the material documents of the university.
