Anticipating a higher number of admissions in the academic session 2021-22, the University of Delhi needs to focus on infrastructure development. P C Joshi, the acting DU Vice-Chancellor recently hinted that increasing the number of seats is important.
The University of Delhi recently started with its UG admission registrations for 2021. Hence, it is getting humongous applications on a daily basis. As per statistics, approximately 90,000 registrations were recorded within 48 hours on Day 1, i.e. 2nd August 2021. Thus, after witnessing such a great response from aspirants, infrastructure development is obligatory.
Statement of DU Vice-Chancellor and several HoDs on infrastructure development:
The DU VC stated that he had hinted at increasing the number of seats. But, due to the covid-19 pandemic, the idea of infrastructure development didn’t go down well. Academic fraternities had many other issues to worry about other than increasing the seats in colleges.
Sangit Kumar Ragi, the Head of Political Science Department said that the varsity is already struggling with poor infrastructure problems. He added that there has been no official communication on seat increase yet.
DU TO ESTABLISH NEW COLLEGE,EDUCATION MINISTER WILL LAY THE FOUNDATION STONE
However, adding more seats in each of the college programs will increase the pressure on physical infrastructure. Thus, there is a limit to which seats can be accommodated in college classrooms. Increasing the seats will subsequently require more classrooms and more professors. So, infrastructure development of that quality is required. Mr. Sangit added that the DU administration needs to address the shortage of faculties and the overall infrastructure crisis.
Problems occurring due to the lack of infrastructure development in DU:
Another professor from Deen Dayal College highlighted that colleges are admitted students more than the sanctioned strength in each cut-off. Thus, if more students get admitted, the quality of education will decrease tremendously. So, a judicial decision is needed to address the challenges and rising needs.
