On Wednesday, Prof. PC Joshi was discharged as Executive Vice Chancellor after a whole day of fighting over the appointment of Registrar at Delhi University(DU). At the same time, Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Tyagi handed over the command of the post of Executive Vice Chancellor to Dr. Geeta Bhatt. On Thursday evening Dr. Geeta Bhatt rejected all the decisions taken by Prof. PC Joshi as Executive Vice-Chancellor.
The controversy over the appointment of the registrant began on Wednesday when a notification was uploaded on DU’s website. In which it was said that Prof. PC Jha is given the additional charge of the post of Director and Registrar of Southern Campus. However, the notification was withdrawn within about an hour. Later on, the appointment of PC Jha was questioned by Executive Vice Chancellor Prof PC Joshi. In the Executive Council meeting on Wednesday late evening, the name of Dr. Vikas Gupta for the post of Registrar was stamped. However late in the night, Prof PC Jha called the Executive Council meeting illegal.
Executive Vice Chancellor Prof PC Joshi also issued a notice late at night asking DU employees not to accept the order of the Registrar. But the dispute did not stop here. On Thursday morning, a notification was uploaded on the DU website to make Dr. Vikas Gupta as the registrant.
However, an order was issued by Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Tyagi. In which it was stated that the Vice-Chancellor appoints Dr. Geeta Bhatt, Director of the Board of Non-Collegiate Women Education, as Executive Vice Chancellor in place of Prof. PC Joshi, exercising the rights under the 11G (4) provisions of DU Act 1922. Within a few hours of taking charge, Dr. Geeta Bhatt issued an order declaring all decisions taken by Prof. PC Joshi as invalid.
Rajesh Jha, Secretary, Academic for Action and Development, said that the credibility of Delhi University has been affected. The educational institution has a proud history of a hundred years old. The desire and greed to gain good positions in university administration and colleges led to a lousy gang-war situation in Vice-Regal Lodge. Where posts and chairs are being forcibly occupied.
The Chancellor’s Office stated that Dr. Geeta Bhatt has been appointed as the Executive Vice-Chancellor. She took charge on 22 October. She will also continue to be the director of the Board of Non-Collegiate Women’s Education.
