Only one transgender candidate has submitted an application for admission in the Delhi University this year, according to data provided by the varsity. The DU admissions 2019 ended on June 22 and as many as 36,7895 candidates registered on the varsity’s admission portal, of whom 2,58,388 proceeded ahead and made payments.
Despite students and scholars from Delhi University taking up the ropes to encourage the transgender community to apply at the varsity for studying various courses and bring them into the higher education mainstream, the response has been pretty dismal this year.
Third gender option included in DU application forms from 2014
In 2014, to provide equal opportunities to students from the transgender community, DU had included the option of ‘other gender’ in their post-graduation application forms and as a result, had nine applicants.
Moreover, the same year saw all central universities including an “other” category for the transgender community in their application forms, academic testimonials and other admission-related documents following a UGC directive.
In 2015, DU included this option in their undergraduate application forms as well and received 66 transgender applicants.
Delhi University admitted 17 students belonging to the transgender community for the post-graduate disciplines in the academic year 2015. This trumped over the 2014 numbers.
