On Sunday, the discovery campus of IIT Madras was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Other dignitaries like Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Governor Banwarilal Purohit were also present on the occasion.

The discovery campus of IIT Madras at Thaiyur, according to the institute, will accommodate the growing research infrastructure requirements of faculty and students. The institute release read that the discovery campus will host state-of-the-art standalone research centers with large dedicated facilities and will have its own support infrastructure such as hostels for the fellows and research scholars, conference facilities, common instrumentation laboratories. Among other amenities.

Soon, the campus will have two operational research centers- The national technology Center for Ports, Coasts, and Waterways which will be funded by the Ministry of Ports, Waterways, and Shipping. For coastal and estuarine research and industrial applications, the center will have the first large ‘Shallow Water Basin’ facility.

Solid Propellant Combustion Modelling Facility will also come up by the DRDO. By the end of this year, both centers will be functional.
