Shifa- Ur- Rehman, the president of Jamia Millia Islamia Alumni association was sent to 10-day police custody by Delhi court. Shifa- Ur- Rehman has been arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) in connection with riots in northeast Delhi in February.
He is also a member of the Jamia coordination committee and he was involved in the criminal conspiracy along with former Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid. The police give all this information about Rehman to court.
The police investigate the matter and found some technical evidence against Rehman which suggested that he incited mobs during the riots. The police also check the CCTV footage of the riot-affected areas and he was seen in CCTV footage Moreover, the police confirmed his involvement in the riots as they have checked Rehman call record details and WhatsApp messages.
There was big chaos everywhere, clashes had broken out between the supporters of the law and those opposing it between February 23 and 26. Due to this in North East Delhi 53 peoples were killed and hundreds were injured. After the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, this violence was worst seen in Delhi.
Under UAPA the police last week arrested the student of Jawaharlal Nehru University Umar Khalid and students of Jamia Millia Islamia Meeran Haider and safoora Zargar. The police confirmed there involvement in violence by the technical evidence. They also have been booked for the offenses of sedition, murder, attempt to murder, promotion enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and rioting.
According to the first information the report, the police have claimed that communal violence was a “premeditated conspiracy”. The report also added that while seeking Rehman custody, the police told the court that Rahman’s name jumped after the interrogation of the other arrested in the case.
To find out the names of Rehman’s other members it told the court that his interrogation was required to disclose the larger conspiracy. The police produced Rehman before Special Judge Sanjeev Kumar Jain and investigated his custodial interrogation for 12 days.
The interrogation of the president of Jamia Alumni Association reveals some stuff behind the violence. It further told the court that the interrogation of the witnesses revealed that Rehman received funds from the members of alumni of Jamia Millia Islamia based in the Middle East countries and was co-coordinating the protest sites.
