The University of Delhi administration has started a controversy by releasing the notification for “college-university seats” above the sanctioned strength when the DU admission process is about to end. Delhi University students, Teachers, and Principals are giving it the name of management quota. While DU college principals are worried about the pressure that will be built on them, the DU professors are concerned about promoting unethical practices.
The members of Delhi University academic and executive council have written a letter to PC Joshi, the DU Vice-Chancellor opposing the official order.
Delhi University Approves Ward Quota for DU PG Courses
A notification released by DU registrar Vikas Gupta said that at the request of DU college principals and members of DU executive council, a committee was constituted to discuss the prospect to offer few seats to DU colleges in view of coronavirus pandemic for DU admission 2020. The formed committee and DU authorities have approved the introduction of the “college-university seats” quota. Delhi University has also approved a ward quota for non-teaching and teaching staff in DU postgraduate admissions.

An elected representative of teachers’ said that this notification has come up as a big surprise. The said notification suggests that out of the five names under the quota, three names will be suggested from the DU colleges, and the rest two will be suggested from the University. The only criteria for selection of the students is that the percentage secured by the candidate shall be up to 5% and in no case beyond 10% of the latest cutoff announced by the DU college. Further, these names are to be sent to the formulated committee.

Balram Pani, the Dean of DU colleges said that it is not a management quota. In times of coronavirus pandemic, some students have missed the chance to secure admission by just 0.5%. He added that no matter how many applications remain pending, just five seats in each college will be offered. The entire process will be carried out transparently.

Members of the executive and academic council say that they have not been taken into confidence on the ongoing matter. Rajesh Jha, DU executive council member added that they oppose any kind of discriminatory quota in Delhi University’s admission procedure, which is a total violation of the principles of giving admission as per merit.
However, there are some supporters of the notice like Manoj Sinha, principal of Aryabhatta College who say that discretion should be enabled in certain regards.
