Delhi University is currently on a plan to raise the fees of the colleges and courses. This is to increase the funds of the university for the quality ascent of resources. Apart from the fees hike, the varsity will also go for the endowment funds and alumni grants.

The plan of fees hike came after the government impels all central universities to reduce their dependency on the public fund. After which, the university put on this idea of a fee hike in a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding(MoU).

University submitted its memorandum to the Education Ministry and University Grants Commission (UGC) to go with these ideas. As a part of the government, their main focus is to reduce universities’ reliance on public funds since 2019.

Despite the plan for a fees hike, the university will continue to charge and regulate its fees for various courses. As to make the quality of education available and accessible to everyone, all other endeavors are to magnify the financial. From endowments, a one-time grant from public or private organizations.

DELHI UNIVERSITY FEES HIKE, A CONCERN

In the Pandemic and the fees, the hike is quite disturbing. As many parents have lost their jobs or having pay cuts.

Moreover, last year many students failed to pay their fees. So, students of St. Stephen’s, Lady Shri Ram College, Hindu college began with fund-raising to help their mates.

In addition, to support the needy one colleges has waived the fees of many students. They assured to provide other financial help.

An official said that UGC regularly sends letters to increase the funds and cut spending. The government has said to reduce the dependency on public funds.

UGC keeps monitoring the implementation of commitment by Universities. The government also ranks institutes as per their earlier commitments. Hence, there is a constraint to go with the commitments for Delhi University, an official said.

WHAT IF FEES IS INCREASED AGAIN?

Abha Dev Habib, a faculty of Miranda House said some of the colleges already have high fees. Now again if it increases then it will create a problem for students. As Delhi University is a public university so, the majority of students are from deprived classes here. Delhi University VC has not given his comments on the fees hike proposals and commitments till now.
