Delhi University is currently going through several discussions for the changes. Now Academic Council(AC) has removed ‘Draupadi’ from the syllabus.
Mahasweta Devi`s creation ‘Draupadi’ is in the B.A(Hons.) English 5th-semester syllabus. The ‘ Draupadi’ is a celebrated short story of a tribal woman.
The (AC) has also approved the implementation of NEP 2020 and a 4-year undergraduate course. All these changes will implement from the next academic year.
This came after a long 12 hours meeting of the council on Tuesday. All these changes overrule the objection of many members and their suggestions.

After the approval of implementation of NEP 2020, multiple exit-entry schemes(MEES), 4-year undergraduate program(FYUP) in Delhi University on Monday. Now this syllabus change in English course.
Moreover, all this after a dissent of the members as well. This has resulted in protests by several stakeholders of Delhi University.
But, the matter is now on the agenda of the meeting for the varsity Executive Council. Earlier also suggestion for changes, opposed in the meetings.
Before the Mahasweta Devi`s ‘Draupadi’ removal. Two Dalit authors Bama and Sukirtharini creations were removed recently. The committee has no expert of the related department whose syllabus changed.
DELHI UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS ON THESE CHANGES
In the meetings of the AC, 14 members have dissent on the change of the English syllabus. After that other responsible committee members are also not with these changes. Recently there was a protest against the NEP 2020 implementation.
Mithuraaj Dhusiya, a member of the Academic Council. He says we are strongly opposing these syllabus changes. Because there was no discussion with other statutory bodies of Delhi University.
POINTS IN DISSENT NOTE ON NEP 2020
- As Delhi University is going with NEP 2020 from next year. A member said there was not an adequate discussion in case of changes due to NEP. Moreover, there was no voting allowed.
- While in the case of NEP(FYUP, MEES), 16 members out of 26 dissented this. The detailed feedbacks were not asked by other stakeholders of DU.
- Delhi University will require upgrades for NEP implementations in infrastructure, labs, staff. The importance of certificates due to MEES will not be the same as it is now.
- Earlier also FYUP was withdrawn in 2014 due to high disapproval of students.
