DELHI UNIVERSITY AFFILIATED COLLEGE OF ART TO BE MERGED WITH AMBEDKAR UNIVERSITY

The Delhi Cabinet on 2nd March announced that they are planning to merge the Delhi University’s College of Art with Ambedkar University Delhi. The Delhi Cabinet has even approved the shifting the affiliation of Delhi College of Arts functioning under Directorate of Training and Technical Education, and GGSIPU affiliated Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management (DIHRM) functioning under the Directorate of Higher Education. Together these two colleges will now become a part of Dr. BR Ambedkar University, said the Delhi Government.

While the Delhi government endorsed the merger on Tuesday, Dr. Vikas Gupta (DU Registrar) said any decision on the affiliation of DU’s College of Art cannot be taken all of a sudden. He added that the Delhi government wrote a letter around 8-10 days back saying that they are planning to de-affiliate the College of Art from DU. In response to the letter, the DU administration had said that they will place it before DU’s academic council as it’s a major policy decision. Dr. Vikas Gupta added that the decision cannot be taken without receiving approval from DU’s statutory bodies.

According to the reports, a Delhi government official said that DU’s Delhi College of Art is fully funded by the Delhi government. Therefore, the decision to affiliate it to Dr. BR Ambedkar University does not require any approval from DU.

Delhi University affiliated College of Art was founded in 1942. BC Sanyal, OP Sharma, Ramendranath Mukherjee, and Biswanath Mukherjee, since the very start have nurtured and headed the college. The present faculty also such members including Professor Meera Sarvanan, Professor BS Chauhan (Principal), Professor Jyotika Sehgal, Ashok Ninawe, Omkarachari, Dr. Kumar Jugeeshu, Kandagiri Ramesh, Kripal Singh, RK Mahajan, Dr. Sumita Kathuria, and Amarjeet Chandak.

SRI VENKATESWARA COLLEGE STUDENTS STAGE PROTEST AGAINST PROPOSAL TO CHANGE COLLEGE AFFILIATION

Four members from the academic council – Alok Ranjan, Kapila Mallah, Chander Mohan Negi, and Sudhanshu Kumar and two members from Executive Council – J L Gupta and Seema Das have written to the Delhi University’s Vice-Chancellor opposing the decision. The letter stated that such attempt to change the affiliation of the DU college leading to the dismemberment of the Delhi University is in contravention to the ordinances, acts, and statutes, of DU which must be halted at all levels.
