In the difficult time of the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. All the academic activities are disturbed due to the lockdown announced by Prime Minister and there is a wait for a new academic calendar to be made. A pdf of 10 pages has been released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in which they have also recommended the admission process to be started from August 1.

The University Grant Commission interacted with stakeholders viz., vice-chancellor of Central state and deemed universities. The principal of the colleges and academic through various electronic means such as email, phone, WhatsApp, online meeting etc.

UGC has recommended the following Academic Calendar for the session 2020-21

  • The classes for the second and third-year student will begin from August 1.
  • The fresh batch for the first semester will join classes from September 1.
  • Accordingly, the examination will be conducted from 1 January 2020 to 25th January 2020.
  • A new session for even semester will begin from January 27 and the dispersion will be on May 25.

The UGC also observed that as on date several School Boards are yet to complete their class 12th examination, in the large interest of the student community, the committee felt that a common admission  test may be conducted at national/ state level for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses and search program in universities and colleges.

The admission for session 2020-21 should be done latest by 31.08.2020 by the universities. Moreover, provisional admission may be made and the last date of submission of relevant documents of qualification examination will be 30.09.2020.

UGC recommended that the university should conduct the semester exam from 1st July 2020

The universities can adopt an alternative and simplified mode examination to shorten the time. The exam may be related to MCQ/ OMR based examination, open-book examination, open choices, assignment/ presentation based assessment etc.

For the practical examinations, the committee of University Grant Commission suggested that the student may be assigned review-based/ secondary data-based project or software-driven projects instead of laboratory-based experiment or field/ survey-based assignments. Moral the university may conduct the practical examination and Viva- Voice through Skype or other meeting apps and in case of intermediate semesters, the practical examination may be conducted during the ensuing semesters.

The universities will conduct an examination on the basis of relaxation of lockdown. Timings of examination may be considered appropriate by the universities and the examination will be conducted keeping in mind the guideline of social distancing.

The committee of University Grant Commission in a report also suggested that all the universities may follow a 6-day week pattern to compensate for the loss for the remaining session of 2019-20 and the new session 2020-21. The report further added that regarding the requirement of the minimum percentage of attendance for the students/ research scholars the period of lockdown may be treated as deemed to be attended by all the students’ research scholars.
