DELHI SCHOOLS MAY OPEN FROM DECEMBER 27

For up to class 5, Delhi schools might reopen from Monday, i.e. 27th December 2021. Hence, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in Delhi and other adjoining regions gave it a nod on 17th December 2021. Earlier in the capital and surrounding areas, schools had to close considering the increasing pollution and worsened air quality.

Phased reopening for Delhi Schools:

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) allowed a phased reopening of DU schools. Thus, classes for standard 6th and above had already started from 18th December 2021. Now, in the 2nd phase, other primary classes will start.

The Commission via its direction no. 50, ordered the state governments of Delhi NCR and GNCTD to reopen Delhi schools and educational institutions. Hence, they made this decision taking the improvement of the Air Quality Index (AQI) into consideration. The AQI has recently improved from Severe (approx. 500 and above) to Very Poor (250 to 350).

CAQM’ statement on Delhi Schools reopening:

Delhi schools were shut down in early December due to a constant increase in pollution. Delhi pollution had started to increase soon after Diwali in November. Also, Delhi has become the no. 1 city in pollution globally. Thus, students’ lives were at stake and closing schools was a necessary call. As per CAQM, the state governments of NCR and GNCTD can only consider the reopening of schools for classes 5th and below after 27th December 2021.

WHY ARE DELHI SCHOOLS OPEN BUT NOT COLLEGES?

As for classes 6th and above, the government needs to reopen them as soon as possible. Hence, all schools, colleges, educational institutions, and skill development institutions are out of the threat of hazardous pollution-related diseases. But, as of Saturday, 25th December 2021, the AQI was still poor.
