DELHI HC TELLS DU NOT TO CHARGE FOR DIGITAL DEGREES

On Monday, the University of Delhi informed the Delhi High Court that on the recommendations of a constituted committee meant for proposing the charges for issuance of the Digital Degree Certificate, the Varsity is charging Rs 750 from the students for whom the printed degree certificate had been issued and that rs 1000 from those students for whom the printed degree has not been issued.

Advocate Mohinder Rupal, representing the University, informed Justice Pratibha Singh that the reason for charging students for issuance of these digital degrees was that several people will be needed to be employed to process and issue these degrees. Further, he also stated that as the timeline is too short hence the varsity is adopting such measures. He said that there won’t be any need for charging more now.

The Delhi High Court said that the Students should not be charged and that the Digital certificates should be issued free of cost.

The Bench of judges remarked that there was a problem as the paper costs more and for that the varsity is not charging but for the electronic degrees they are charging. The court said that the students should not be charged for the digital degrees instead they should be free of cost.

The court asked the University if the issuance of these electronic degree certificates will be made a regular feature on annual basis or if it was only for this academic year. This happened after several students raised grievances on the Imposition of fee proposed which has to be charged for the provision of digital Degrees.
