For around 54 central Universities, the education ministry is pondering over the proposal to conduct a common entrance test for admission in undergraduate (UG) courses. A committee has been set up comprising 7 seven members to submit its report within a month. The committee is chaired by RP Tiwari, VC of Central University of Punjab. This move might be implemented for 2021-22.

RP Tiwari shared that the numbers are poor when it comes to student diversity and this move may allow students from different walks, all walks, to get enrolled in the courses of their wish in desired varsities. Also that the issue od lack of uniformity in the UG admission process as some universities conduct entrance test while few rely on merit-based admissions. Alongwith customizing the exam pattern, this central admission process will simplify the entire procedure.
To finalize the report, the company is expected to meet on 9 January before submitting it. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and the disruption caused by it, the schedule of various entrance exams is uncertain. Board exams of many states have also been rescheduled for May-June 2021.

Rajib Ray, professor, Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, and also the president of Delhi University Teacher’s Association (DUTA) said that as there are multiple state-level boards and their respective marking scheme can be a problem while comparison. But he also views this move with a positive aspect that students can get through UG Admissions in only one test. He reinstated the necessity for the ministry to look into diverse factors before implementing it.
