As per the recently published Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU 2020), Calcutta University became the best varsity in the country while the Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bangalore) has bagged the first position among the best higher education institutes in India.
The other top higher educational institutions in the country, as per the recently published Shanghai Ranking, are:

IGNOU OFFERS COMBINATION OF COURSES ACROSS PROGRAMMES
Indian Institutes are not even on the list in the top 100 institutes and the best higher education institute in India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bangalore) is in the list in the category of 501-600.
