On Friday, some Delhi University’s Academic Council members demanded to remove the St. Stephen’s College Principal as he has completed his five-year tenure. The principal of St. Stephen’s College is John Varghese and is being asked to remove him from the Principal post.
This demand was raised by four members of the Academic Council. These include Biswajit Mohanty, Vikas Gupta, Monami Sinha, Vikas Gupta and Mitthuraj Dhusia.
Further, on 1 March 2016, Varghese was appointed as Principal of St. Stephen’s College for a fixed period of five years. However, the Supreme Council of the college extended his tenure in 2022. In response, Varsity wrote to St. Stephen’s Chairman and said that the extension of tenure is ‘null and void’ in August last year.

Also, the university claimed that the governing body of St. Stephen’s College didn’t pay attention to the UGC guidelines and regulations. The four Academic Council members alleged, “The St. Stephen’s College Principal must be immediately removed from the principal position and someone else must be appointed.”
Academic Council Members also Demands Justice for Ad Hoc Teachers
Besides, the DU AC members also demanded justice for the displacement of ad hoc and temporary teachers. Moreover, they protested against the issued notification about the opening and closing timing of colleges. It reads that the college should remain open from 8 am to 8 pm and it was issued without any discussion with the Academic or Executive Council.
